Family portrait session with a heart

Family portrait session with a heartThis military family warmed my heart as I was capturing their portraits. I have met hundreds of families over the years and I can honestly say there’s nothing more humbling than to photograph a military family; especially a family who has a loved one home from active duty.
I met the Mix family in July. They entered & won our ‘Operation: Familitary’ pay-it forward contest. We captured these portraits when their son Seth was home on a brief visit.

Upon arriving at the park, I was immediately greeted by the cutest little boys waving American flags and wearing special dog tags. It was clear from that moment that this was going to be a memorable session. The laughter and pure joy that was shared amongst this group of people was amazing to witness. The bond they share could make other families jealous.

The thought of a military life turns most people away. It takes strength, courage and patience to spend hours, days, even months apart from one another. It’s not easy being a part of a military family - not for the soldier, and not for their wives, mothers, fathers, children and other family members. Milestones are missed, conversations are lonely and sometimes all you crave is a hug. You have never experienced how excruciatingly slow time passes until you have waited for a loved one to return home. You have never realized how agonizing it is to sit at home going about your daily business while waiting to hear from your loved one, constantly wondering if he/she is ok. I understand; I met my husband towards the end of his military career. My heart changed forever the day he left for the Iraqi War and I was the happiest person on the planet when he returned home safe. I fear the day that our daughter will choose to join in her daddy’s footsteps, but I know that if that day does come, it will be a day of great pride - because this is how we roll. In a military family, you accept your sacrifices without complaining. There’s something greater at stake. On this Veteran’s Day and every day, I pray for each and every one of our military members. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices. Thank you to the families who remain strong and support their loved ones fighting for our freedom.
brotherly bond
